The Automation Engineer will be responsible for identifying automation opportunities to improve our existing processes and leading their implementation in a manufacturing environment. The position will require approximately 50% of the engineer’s time to be spent on the manufacturing floor evaluating and executing improvements. Success will also require skilled application in a very hands-on environment as well as project management and leadership abilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility is to assist in the development and realization of the plant’s continuous improvement initiative with an emphasis on successful implementation of plant automation projects.

  • Supports manufacturing by troubleshooting existing automation equipment

  • Trains technical associates on current and new automation equipment

  • Makes results a top priority, regularly updating the plant’s implementation plan

  • Empowers peers through positive reinforcement of team oriented continuous improvement

  • Communicates status of engineering efforts to plant management and other engineering resources within the division

  • Collaborate with Safety and Operations professionals to ensure successful management of change

  • Provides documentation of results and benefits achieved

  • Shares “best practice” methods and ideas across plants/divisions

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Robotics Engineering, Controls, or Mechanical Engineering or relevant technical degree is highly preferred

  • 3+ years of experience in a related field (automation and manufacturing)

  • 2+ years of experience using robotic simulation programs (Fanuc RoboGuide preferred) for design and simulation

  • 1+ years of experience using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for design and simulation of ancillary tooling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background and knowledge in automated manufacturing systems

  • Working Knowledge of lean tools and methodology, strong quantitative, analytical, and process redesign skills

  • Bottom line oriented with knowledge of financial functions

  • Industrial and collaborative robot experience with associated peripheral equipment (vision systems, force gauges, end of arm tooling options, safety accommodations, etc.)

  • Experience with design and implementation of safety systems in robotic applications

  • 2D & 3D CAD skills such as floor layouts and tooling designs

  • Familiar with PLC programming (Allen Bradley/Siemens)

  • Ability to create prototypes and simulations utilizing Fanuc RoboGuide software

  • Fanuc robot programming skills including integration of ancillary equipment and devices

  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain automation concepts well

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Good presentation skills to effectively share the success and ideas

  • Ability to work with minimum supervisor

Preferable Characteristics

  • Demonstrated ability to not only use Six Sigma and Lean Principles such as DMAIC, SPC, Cpk, GR&R, Control Plans, DOE, Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Visual Factory, TPM, Kaizen, JIT, Demand Flow, Single Piece Flow, SMED as well as other Continuous Improvement Process tools

  • Experience with injection molding, blow molding and assembly

  • Clearly communicate business goals so associates understand how they contribute to the organization’s success. Extensive short-term planning based on established and changing priorities

  • Involves ongoing problem solving

  • Some irregular hours may be required
