The Director of Merchandising (DOM) is accountable for leading the product development strategy for Newell Brands Technical Apparel (NBTA), a division of Newell Brands (NYSE: NWL), a globally-recognized designer, developer, marketer and retailer of high-performance technical apparel and equipment with a portfolio of brands that includes Marmot® and ExOfficio®.
As the senior product development strategist for Newell Brands Technical Apparel (NBTA), the DOM leads overall brand efforts by thinking strategically across all channels to meet consumer needs and achieve business goals. This position collaborates with marketing, design, technical design, sourcing, materials and innovation teams to achieve both seasonal and long-term business growth goals. The incumbent is adept at translating the direction set by strategic leaders into a brand experience that connects with consumers. A key to the success of this role will be the building upon the brand DNA, while reinvigorating the overall product offer to compel customers to choose our products over alternatives.
Creates product development strategy based on financial goals, brand objectives and consumer insights. Builds both seasonal and long-term merchandising strategies that leverage brand strengths and new opportunities for growth.
Leverages selling data and other inputs to optimize collection offering and drive efficiency within the supply chain. Works closely with sourcing and technical design to ensure seasonal and long-term margin targets are achieved.
Works with commercial channel leaders to understand growth opportunities’ and how product development can support those objectives. Closely monitors industry landscape and sell through data to understand and predict trends in the business. Uses understanding of competitor market positions to take advantages of opportunities and minimize risk to the business.
Presents seasonal and long-term product development strategies to leadership and key internal stakeholders to achieve alignment and buy-in on proposed direction.
Leads team in support of Sales and Marketing on product and brand launches. Ensures all product information necessary for seasonal product launches is accurate, on-time and delivered to the responsible recipients. Leads and/or participates in presentations to sales team and major retailers. Solicits feedback to incorporate into future product development.
Establish and ensure product development milestones and calendar due dates are met with the goal of reducing lead times and improving overall time to market. Seamlessly coordinates the team’s activities across 3 to 4 seasons at any given time.
Evaluate the commercial success of products by studying available selling data and reports on regular and ongoing basis
Actively works across product categories to ensure alignment in aesthetic and direction to ensue total seasonal offering represents the brand and its strategic direction
Actively manages the professional development of direct reports. Works with people managers to ensure they are facilitating professional growth of their direct reports. Communicates and maintains high standards of professional performance for all team members. Sets the standard for team to follow.
University or four-year college degree in merchandising or equivalent experience
A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in various phases of product design and development, preferably in outdoor, travel, or similar apparel manufacturing industry
Practical knowledge of related functions such as textile technology, production, sales and merchandising, and practical knowledge of product application and functionality are required
Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and comfortable in foreign work environments
Knowledge of textile and material construction and properties
Knowledge of product costs
Ability to manage and lead change
Confident and influential presentation/speaking skills
Strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated collaboration, interpersonal influence, and teamwork skills (maintains effective communication and working relationships)
Results orientation while exhibiting great creativity, energy, and resourcefulness
