Position Title: EH&S Leader

Reports to: VP of EH&S

Location: Columbia, SC

Job Summary:

The EHS Leader is responsible for directing the development, implementation, and evaluation of critical EHS processes, programs, and procedures to achieve goals, objectives, and continuous improvement related to safety, the environment and health at the Columbia, SC facility.

The EHS Leader has the responsibility to engage the site leadership teams to ensure environmental, safety and health excellence, as well as provide information and guidance for activities relating to the site-wide EHS objectives and to ensure that EHS site goals are aligned with relevant business unit and corporate EHS goals. The EHS Leader works in a team environment where accountability for injury/illness prevention, EHS compliance assurance and asset protection is incumbent on both the leadership team and the individual.

Job Duties:

  • Facilitate site-specific health and safety management systems designed to reduce employee injuries and illnesses.

  • Ensure that occupational illnesses and injuries are immediately reported, thoroughly investigated and promptly addressed, consistent with established standards.

  • Recommends, develops and implements improvements in policies, procedures and equipment to prevent incidents and injuries.

  • Lead the safety lead team.

  • Assure compliance with site regulatory environmental permits (recordkeeping, reporting, permitting and renewal) & provide compliance direction for environmental programs and permits.

  • Responsible for recordkeeping and reporting requirements under permitted environmental processes.

  • Manages all environmental related legal matters, regulatory agency contacts, and enforcement actions, under the oversight of Jarden Corporate.

  • Operate, enhance, and maintain the environmental, health and safety management systems for the site in accordance with all state and federal guidelines.

  • Tracks and reports EHS corrective actions from incident investigations and external evaluations.

  • Provides and directs plant environmental & safety training and annual compliance auditing

  • Participate in the site capital planning including EHS review of capital projects, safety design reviews and environmental (New Source Review) evaluations of process/equipment’s changes at the site.

  • Implement wellness programs to meet site needs.

  • Provides support to the plants’ culture of continuous improvement. Able to lead and participate in kaizen workshops to firmly insert EH&S thinking in all new standards and new procedures developed as a result of continuous improvement.

  • Actively participates as a member of the Leadership Team.

  • Provides 24 hour on call response for medical and environmental emergencies. Coordinates all facility emergency response and site evacuation programs, including the design and execution of annual drills and management communication.

  • Inspects facility processes to detect existing or potential environmental, safety and health hazards, determines corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.

  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the Corporation and the community; and maintains the professional competence, knowledge and skill necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities.

  • Responsible for updating, maintaining, controlling, and creating new Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all products sold by Shakespeare.

  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in safety or environmental sciences

  • 5-10 yrs of experience in a similar role

  • Professional knowledge of federal standards for the manufacturing environment (OSHA, EPA, DOT, CFR 1910, etc.)

  • Experience in regulatory filings and reporting

  • Experience with ISO 14000 management system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications beyond education are a plus
